Triumph Repair: Replacing Trailing Arm Bushes, tr4a irs, poly bushes

Question
Hi Howard,

I believe the trailing arm bushings on my 1966 TR4A (IRS) are original and well over due for replacement. There's definitely some shifting or jiggling going on in the rear end.  How big of a job would this be and what are the basic steps to get access to the bushes?  Does the whole trailing arm need to come out?

I plan on replacing with poly bushes which come in two halves. So, I believe they will slip in place w/o the need of a press.

Thanks

Bob

Answer
Hi Bob,
If you can get the old bushings out you may be able to do that. I don't remember if I changed any of those bushing or not but I have replaced similar bushings "on the car" with a large threaded rod I bought from a hardware store and some nuts, tubes and small bushings used as a small press which enabled me to do that kind of work "on the car" instead of removing everything.
