Triumph Repair: differental oil seals, differential, pinion

Question
QUESTION: Hi Jim, I have a question I am going to tackle the oil seals on my differental axles and pinion. do you have any advise for me before I get started? I know I need a bearing splitter I have one ready. Any advise help would be great. Thanks  Mark

ANSWER: Mark,

Changing the seals is a fairly straightforward process, providing the side axle bearings cooperate and come off easily.  If they're stubborn it's possible to break the seal holder (side cover).

After having that problem 15 years ago I developed a method to remove the side axle bearing without a bearing splitter.

Basically, break out the ball bearing retainer with a pin punch and remove the outer race.  Use a dremel (or similar) to cut a groove in the inner race, almost to the axle.  A quick tap with a cold chisel and the inner race will let go.

Obviously it destroys the bearing.  But you were going to replace them anyway, right?

Cheers,

Jim

QUESTION: What a great method I am replacing the bearings. The pinion seal how do you get it out? After its out and replaced what do I torque the bolt back on? thanks Mark

Answer
Mark,

If all you're doing is replacing the pinion seal, simply count the number of turns/partials turns it takes to undo the pinion nut.

As to the seal, I've had success using a small drill and 2 self tapping screws.  Drill two holes 180 degrees apart and fit the screws.  Then use pliers to pull the screws/seals out.

If that doesn't work you can use a small screw driver or pin punch to crunch the outer lip of the seal (where it's stuck in the differential housing), once the outer contact is disturbed a bit the seal will usually come loose.

Jim
