Triumph Repair: GEARSHIFT KNOB REMOVAL, clutch slave cylinder, cone nut

Question
Hello Jim
I have a 1980 EUROPEAN SPECS Spitfire (no mods). I am attempting to replace the clutch slave cylinder. I have already remove the interior trim and the facia support but I have not been able to remove the gearshift knob (with the overdrive). Although my car is european specs looking into various parts catalogs the part is exactly the same as with the US specs models. The only nut I see in the knob is the cone nut, I tried to loosen the cone nut but it only turned a tiny bit in either direction. I am afraid to apply force into the cone nut (unless I am sure this is the way to remove the knob). I don't want to brake anything. Can you tell me how to do this properly.
THANKS
Jose

Answer
Andy,

Don't remove the gearshift knob from the gearshift lever.

Remove the carpet and undo whatever is holding the rubber shift gaiter in place.  Reach below the gaiter and undo the locking ring, then the shift lever will come out easily.

Cheers,

Jim
