Triumph Repair: 1972 tr6 triumph, bolt holes, stock cams

good morning, i have a 1972 tr6 triumph that i need to know how to time the two gears on cam, also the valve setting of the stock cam...someone did put a dot on the cam and you can see it through one of the cam bolt holes. all the dots are lined up like their suppose to be..any help asap would be greatly APPRECIATED..

Hi Tinker,
There should be a dot next to one of the holes in the cam sprocket and that you should place at about 11:00 o-clock as you face the front of the engine. That is also the hole you use to view the dot on the cam. Set the mark on the crank sprocket so it points directly at the center of the camshaft which should line up with a mark on the cam sprocket that is pointed directly at the center of the crankshaft. Number 1 & 6 piston should be exactly at TDC and if you have the head off put two pushrods into number one and six position. lay a straight edge across the top of each set of two pushrods to see that the intake and the exhaust pushrods are level with each other. If the head is on, the two valves on number one cylinder are closed and the two valves on number six are both slightly open BUT!! both must be open the same amount. This is called "Split Overlap", most stock cams split overlap at TDC of the exhaust stroke.

Valve clearance is .010" on in. & ex.
