Triumph Repair: Flasher unit, negative earth, flasher units

Question
Hi, i've purchased a half restored Triumph Herald, and have fitted a indicator/flasher unit. With the ignition on the indicator warning light on the dash lights up dimmly(still enough to get noticed). When the indicator switch is operated the light will go out for a second before normal flashing comences. I have replaced the flasher unit with a similar kind with no avail. Checked most wiring/connections.
nothing. Is it the wrong type off unit? any help greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!

Answer
Chris,

I'm guessing it's a negative earth (ground) system?

You might check all the ground points in the wiring harness.  The indicator light should not be lighting without the signals being turned on.

The traditional flasher units work by heating a bi-metallic element when the flashers are engaged.  Once it's warm enough it breaks the circuit.  The extra delay implies that there's not a good connection somewhere in the system.

Cheers,
