Triumph Repair: GT6 Mk3 (plus) Stromberg Carb Problem, compression gauge, stromberg carb

Question
QUESTION: When the engine is running I have a problem in that a significant amount of fuel is running out into the air filter. When you accelerate it gets worse. Any idea of the cause.

ANSWER: Hi Des,
Only two things I can think of are, a leaking intake valve or a flooding float chamber on that carb.

If you have compressed air available let me know and I will give you a sure 100% test of the valves.

Let me know,
Howard

QUESTION: Thanks Howard, Unfortunately I do not have access to compressed air. Any suggestions as to what i should do in the absence of compressed air.

Answer
All you can do then is a standard "Wet" and a "Dry" compression test.
A compression gauge is not expensive. Be sure to hold the throttle open and turn the engine at least 4 or 5 revolutions on each cylinder being tested. A second compression test on each cylinder with about a teaspoon of engine oil in the plug hole will give you the "Wet" test and it will be higher than the first called a "Dry" test. It should not be more than 10 to 15% higher. The dry test should be about 125 PSI to 180 PSI depending on the compression ratio of that engine.
Let me know the results of the tests.
