Triumph Repair: Clutch Problems, spitfire 1500, clutch problems

Question
Jim, I recently brought a 1980 Spitfire 1500 RHD, a month or two after having the car I experienced some problems getting into gear (I had to pump it occasionally).

Then about 200 miles later I couldn't change alltogether, so I installed a new master cylinder, slave cylinder & connecting hydraulic hose. The old cylinders I removed quite obviously needed removing once I looked at them.

I then bled the system with the help of a friend and refilled the resevoir with fluid. There is no difference at all..

am i doing something wrong in bleeding, somehow i must have let air in.. (presumably when I was filling up afterwards) ?

Answer
Thomas,

There are several things that could be causing the problem.

First off... when you bleed the clutch you must keep the reservoir topped off with fluid during the bleeding process.  If you didn't then there is a good chance that there's air in the system.

When you replaced the clutch slave I presume you were able to get the slave mated with the push rod properly?   And there is a bit of adjustment travel on how the slave is clamped into the retaining collar.

I'll pass along my trick for bleeding the clutch.   Top off the reservoir and prop the clutch pedal to the floor with a piece of 2x4.  Should be about 22 or 23 inches long in order to hit the metal boxwork under the front of the drivers seat.  Leave the car that way for several days.  Top the reservoir again and see if that helps.

Cheers,

Jim
