Triumph Repair: 1964 TR4 , clutch, overdrive transmission, clutch pedal

Question
QUESTION: Howard the  clutch  seem  to  engage  fine  ,  car  will  go  into  all  gears  properly but  only at idle  in  driveway    on  road  will  only  go  into  1st  or  second  or  not  go into  gear  at  all,  clutch  goes  ok  ,  ther  is  no  gear  noise  ,  but  nothing  happens

ANSWER: HI Larry,
Do you mean the shift lever notches into each gear but there is no drive or the lever will not go into the "H" pattern? If it will shift into 1st & 2nd but not 3rd or 4th then it is a gearbox problem not a clutch problem as the clutch does not know which gear you are trying to engage.
Do this, Engine off, hand brake off, on level ground shift into 1st gear and rock the car forward and aft to confirm it is in gear. Do the same in all four gears and tell me the results. Also, is this an overdrive trans?
Let me know,
Howard

QUESTION: Howard  the  car  goes  into  gear  1,234-r  at  low  speed,    the  car  moves,    and  it  will  shift  into  gear  at  moderate  speed  but  when  I  let  the  clutch  out  nothing  happens  no  gear  ,  a  friend  thinks  it  might  no  be  getting  enough  power  from  hydraulics .Thans Larry

Answer
First check that there is about one inch or more free play in the clutch pedal when it is up. If it is firm as soon as you touch the pedal, the system my be holding the clutch disengauged. If when you have no drive and you can let the RPM down low to idle and it seems to go, then you probably have a slipping clutch and you need an experienced Triumph mechanic to determine if it is a clutch hydraulic problem or a internal clutch problem. You didn't answer my question about "Is it an overdrive transmission"? An overdrive problem can also cause a lack of drive in a gear.
If it is just a clutch hydrolic problem, it can be corected without removing the gearbox, but if the hydrolic release system is Ok then you will need to remove the transmission to gain access to the clutch. If it is an overdrive transmission other tests need to be run to determine if the OD is at fault and this test needs to be run before the trans is pulled as there is no way to test the OD when it is out.
