Triumph Repair: 79 spit with no fire, alternator problems, alternator belt

Question
Ok Howard, I have good gas pressure, but the timing light stops flashing at higher rpms.  I was able to recreate the problem with the car sitting still.  I even left the gas cap off.  As you rev the engine, the tach stops and the timing light also stops.  I replaced the coil, cap and rotor button a week ago because of this problem.  The spark plugs look good, as do the wires(7mm).  When you rev the engine at the carb, and then let it go, the engine dies and then comes back to life. The timing is set to 10 btdc.  Thank you in advance, Jarod

Answer
It sounds like either an ignition module or coil but try one more thing before you try throwing any money at it.
Remove the alternator belt and try reving the engine to see if you still get the engine shut off at high RPM. I have run into a few alternator problems that at high RPM would give an ignition module a problem. If it still does it you will need to find a shop with a scope to look at the ignition system while at the RPM to see what is failing the coil or the ignition unit itself. Another possible is the wrong coil for the ignition unit. You didn't say what ignition unit was in it. It would be very unusual to have the ordinal Opus-Lucas as they usually failed before the car got out of warranty.
Let me know.
