Triumph Repair: Fuel Guage, fuel guage, auto meter

Question
Is it possible to use an aftermarket fuel guage with the original sending unit.  Can I just put new ends on the wires for the new guage.  I purchased an Auto Meter Temp. guage to replace the stock one for accuracy and it doesn't look good next to the Smith fuel guage.  I thought I would balance it out by replacing it with an Auto Meter Fuel gauage as well.  The Auto Meter Temp.  really compliments the fascia- Plain, but very sporty.  I went with the Z Series.

It would be unlikely that the sending unit and the AutoMeter have the same values. Usually a parts store will not let you try it for fear the gauge would be damaged. The only way you can be sure it will work is to contact AutoMeter and ask if that gauge is compatible with a Tri spitfire.
