Triumph Repair: revving then stalling, fuel filler cap, fuel feed

Question
QUESTION: Jim, I have a '73 spit 1500 and recently when starting the car fully choked it turns over and revs around 3000 then drops down all the way to stall. If I give it gas it does not respond to this either, after a long while it may run correctly but as of the last try it didnt.

ANSWER: Bob,

It sounds like you're not enough fuel to the carb.

Quick test:  Get a can of starting ether and have a friend stand by.  When the car stalls again give it a shot of ether and see if it keeps running.  If so:

Are you sure there is fuel in the gas tank?  Do you still have the mechanical pump?

You might try carefully removing the fuel feed to the Stromberg and put the fuel hose into a can.  Have a friend crank over the engine for a few seconds and see if you get any gas in the can.

If not, start working back towards the tank.

Jim

QUESTION: Jim, I recently removed the tank to remove rust and have
"red coated" because of clogging. I replaced and it still clogs at the tank ( before fuel filter) when I blow back to tank into tube the gas returns to flow, then runs like this. the tank is clean what is the source of clog now??

Answer
Bob,

Next time, try popping open the fuel filler cap.  If you get good gas flow then... it's the breather/vapor recovery setup.

Otherwise it's either junk in the lines or the shop that cleaned/coated the tank put in a bit too much coating.

Jim
