Triumph Repair: 1972 TR6, thumb nuts, thumb nut

Question
QUESTION: We're restoring the interior of the TR6 and having trouble with the dash.  Is there a trick to removing the knobs and crash pads?  The dimmer switch knob is NOT budging (broke the dash trying to get it off--have a new dash but need it off the guage to put on the new dash) :) We have unwired all guages to get the dash off but now the heater control section is another dilemna.  Any trick of the trade would be greatly appreciated.
ANSWER: Hi Kathy,
Most round knobs on the older British cars were held on with an internal peg. Look around the side of the knob for a small hole. Find something you can insert into that hole and press in hard and you should feel the peg which is spring loaded. As you press that peg in, pull on the knob and it should slip off. Knobs on things like choke controls are attached to the cable and can not have the knob removed. You have to undo the cable and it's housing and remove it as a unit. On knobs like the heater controls you will find a set screw holding them on.

The gauges have to come out the front by unscrewing the "thumb" nuts on threaded pegs in behind the dash. Some hold one metal bracket going across the back of the gauge and others will have individual brackets on each threaded peg. The lower center assembly that is at the bottom center of the dash can be removed as a unit and dropped down. (As I remember just two bolts)
There is a sub metal dash behind the wood dash and you may need to remove the glove box to see all of the screws holding the wood dash in. The heater vents are also held in by a thumb nut and bracket.
I hope this helps.

QUESTION: Thanks!  Have another dilemna--how to remove the dashboard--does the windshield have to come off and if so... how to do it too.  The dashboard is breaking off underneath the seal, which is between it and the windshield.
Is there a good book or online resource that give detailed instructions on taking everything apart?
Kathy

Answer
No Kathy, you don't have to take the windshield out. It has been a long time since I have removed one but I have done several and as I remember you just need to remove all instruments, the glove box, the heater vents and the center switch panel. From there you can get a mirror and a light and locate the screws behind the rear metal dash that hold the wood dash in.
I have friends involved now in several TR-6 restorations and I will quiz them if there is anything further I am leaving out and get back to you.
