Triumph Repair: TR250 Hot Starter Motor, starter motor, windings

Question
My TR250 starts ok when cold. but stalls when hot.  Starter motor will barely turn the engine when hot and the starter motor itself is hot to the touch immediately after cranking.  Q1:  Possible internal short in the starter motor or solenoid?  Q2: Could this also cause the car to stall when running?

Answer
Hi BK,
Q1, The starter motor should not get hot unless it is needed to spin the engine a long time to start. It can get hot from shorts in the windings in the starter motor itself. It can also get hot if the engine is hard to rotate or has a ring gear or starter bendix gear problem causing an extra load on the starter motor.
Q2, No. Not unless the starter stays engaged after the engine starts. (Unlikely because it would come apart quickly as soon as the engine is reved up a couple of times)
