Triumph Repair: triumph spitfire clutch, clutch pedal, clutch slave

Question
Hi jim im new to spitfires even though i now own 3 but ive only bought them all in the last year ! Anyway the last one i bought is a 1980 & its all running well apart from the clutch pedal has gone solid and wont push down ? It was like this when i bought it thats why i bought it cheap , The pedal is hard yet i can start the car and select any gear without being able to push the pedal down but the car wont move anywhere so the clutch must be on all the time i take it ? One fellow told me to change the master cylinder so i did but its still the same . So is the clutch nackered or could it be a simply fix ?

Answer
Vince,

It's likely one of three things:

1)  Clutch slave is frozen in the full out position
2)  throwout bearing slider is frozen on it's collar
3)  Pressure plate has failed (not likely.. but possible).

Simple test is to pull the trans cover off and pull the slave off the trans.  You should be able to see the slave piston move my GENTLY pushing it into the cylinder then GENTLY putting pressure on the clutch pedal.

Cheers,

Jim
