Triumph Repair: Zenith Manual Choke Conversion, zenith stromberg, upcomming season

Question
Jim,

The water choke on my 79 Spitfire (Zenith 150) is not performing very well. I've tried adjusting it to no avail. Once the car warms up to runs fine.

I see that VB sells a manual choke conversion kit for my carb. Do you have any experience with this conversion? Is this a good way to go?

I'd like to switch to a Weber set-up in the future but I would like to drive the car a bit this summer to make sure the engine is in good enough shape to make the switch to a weber. (The car sat for 6 years before I got it running in November.) I'm hoping that the manual choke conversion kit and an oval air filter on the Zenith will do for the upcomming season.

Thanks in advance.

John

Answer
John,

I haven't done the conversion on a Zenith Stromberg but I did to the converion on a Weber 32/36 DGAV with electric choke, it seemed I could never get the choke to open correctly also.  Great swap.

Or you could look for a ZS carb from an older Spitfire.  From 1970 until '77ish they were mechanical choke setups... so it'd even look "stock".

Cheers,

Jim
