Triumph Repair: spit tranny follow up, clutch pressure plate, clutch disc

Question
Thank you Mucho for the info Jim,,, it really helps me get on the right path. My follow up is .>>> are the flywheel bolt dimensions you are referring to ? the  "wrench " size used to tighten or loosen the bolts?  .. >Q #2 will the "flat " and "ridged" flywheels both  work  equally well? >Q #3 how does one determine the difference between a "3 rail" and a "single rail gearbox" >Q#4 does the size (diameter) of the clutch/pressure plate need to be any particular size?  Sorry about all the extra questions,,,Im just hoping to assemble this drivetrain right the first time out.-Keith.

Answer
Keith,

1)  For SAE bolts they're defined by the diameter of the bolt thread (shaft).  So a 3/8"  bolt is 3/8" at the threads and normally uses a 9/16" wrench to fasten/remove.

2)  There are two important differences in the flywheels.  The earlier "flat" flywheel uses a smaller clutch disc/pressure plate setup. The "flat" flywheel is also lighter.

The 1500 spec "ridged" flywheel takes the larger clutch and the flywheel is heavier.

If you're going racing you a) want the larger clutch (power transmission) but you don't want the greater mass.

For street use it doesn't really matter although it'd be better to stay "stock" just to make parts hunting easier later on.

3)  3-Rail gearbox:   10 spline input shaft.  Shifter support extension is not connected to the tailshaft housing.

Single-Rail gearbox:  20 spline input shaft.  Shifter support is part of the tailshaft housing.

4)  See #2 regarding flywheel type for clutch information.

Also, you neglect to mention which year car this is being installed into.

Cheers,

Jim
