Triumph Repair: Fluid on Driver Floor Mats, clutch pedals, clutch master

Question
I have a 1975 1500 that's all original except for a new master cylinder (a few years ago). It has 48K miles. Lately it's gotten more driving opportunities, but after it runs for a while I notice a puddle on the driver floor mat. I've smelled the fluid, but it doesn't have an odor at all. The fluid consistency is oily; but not motor oil. What could this be and what DIY tip do you have. Thanks! Todd

Answer
Todd,

First guess would be brake fluid (or clutch... same fluid).  There's typically not much "smell" to the DOT3/DOT4 fluids but they do have an oily type feel to them.

After that it could water leaking along either the rubber gaiters that seal the brake/clutch pedals or through holes in the firewall.

Last possibility is water leaking from the ventilation system because of a blocked drain tube.

Check the brake and clutch master fluid levels.  If they're OK and stay ok even after it leaks... start looking at how well the firewall is sealed above the footwell.

Cheers,

Jim
