Triumph Repair: Spitfire startup, float chamber, fuel level

Question
Have a problem starting my 1500.  Seems I need to prime the carb with starting fluid before it'll fire up.  After that point and when it's warmed up there's no problem restarting.  I'm sure the problem is my carb (I've already rebuilt it once), but what specifically is causing the problem?

Much thanks,

Answer
Butch,

First off, are you using the choke when you start the car?  Or do you have a later water choke setup?

If it's a water choke carb it's possible that the automatic choke is either stuck or needs a bit of adjustment.

If it's a manual choke carb and you are using the choke, there is more than one problem that can cause this symptom.

The choke linkage might be out of adjustment.

The fuel pump is not getting enough gas to the carb.

The fuel level in the float chamber might be set too low.

Or the timing might be a bit off.

Let me know some more details and we'll get this figured out.

Cheers,

Jim
