Triumph Repair: Fuel, triumph spitfire 1500, vacuum lines

Question
Jim

I own a 1978 triumph spitfire 1500.  I have owned the car for 10 years. The previous owner replaced the orifianl carb with a mikuni type 5 carb and the factory distributor with a Mallory disributor.  About 2 months ago, the car started to hesitate when I stepped on the gas.  It would lose power and stall out.  Since then, I have rebuilt the carb, new plugs, new plug wires, new fuel filter, fuel pump, and put in a new Mallory high output coil.  It is still stalling out when I step on the gas.  Can you please provide some input where I should look next to try to troubleshoot or diagnose the problem.

Thank yo for your time

Answer
Brian,

If the car is stalling when you step on the gas it's either mixture or timing.

Simple things to check:  the vacuum lines for cracking/leaks.   The needle valve in the carb to see if it's sticking open or stuck closed.  Fuel level in the float chamber.

A colortune mixture tester and a good timing light can help sort most problems.
