Triumph Repair: spitfire 1500 differential noise, axle bearings, shimming

Question
I rebuilt my Spitfire's rear end about 3000 miles ago.  All new gears, seals, and bearings.
It has been running quiet until now.  It has started to whine in the 50 to 60 mph range.  The oil level is corrct. It seems to be more noticible when you take your foot off the gas.
I don't want to do another rebuild.

Thanks,

B C

Answer
B C,

Did you use the proper crushable spacer or did you have to resort to shimming the pinion to set the preload?

Unfortunately, if the pinion preload was not set correctly then you may have to go back into the diff.

You might check the u-joints for binding, and check the rear axle bearings to see if they're the source of the noise.

Cheers,

Jim
