Triumph Repair: 1975 Spitfire - Starting Problem, zenith stromberg, spitfire 1500

Question
Hello,

I have a 1975 Spitfire 1500 with a Zenith Stromberg CD Carb - The manual choke incorporates a valve disc, not a starting bar.  I cannot get the car to start when cold - ie sitting for more than 4 hours.  If I spray a dash of starting fluid into the air intake, it starts up no problem.  If the engine is warm, it starts up no problem.  Once started the car runs fine - idles at 900 rpm's, no hesitation, feels smooth etc...Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Answer
Paul,

Are you positive that the choke cable is moving the choke lever the correct amount?   That's the first (and easiest) thing to check.

Another possibility is that the choke mechanism on has gotten gummed up with age.  It's fairly easy to remove and clean out.

Cheers,
