Triumph Repair: 74 TR6 IDLE WITHOUT RETARD DIAPHRAM, vacuum leaks, roadster factory

Question
Thanks for the answer, i have tried both Moss and Victoria B. but they have nothing.  The Roadster Factory "claims" to do rebuilds but I haven't had a lot of success with their timelyness.

Ah, by ear, right.  Ya see I'm not that confident in my ear.  Even though I don't mind tweeking, I am really hoping for a starting point given by an expert.  Right now (after completely re-building the Strombergs) it is at 12BTDC at 1200 RPM and is smooth but still has heavy lag or hesitation at first gear and loads up (backfires thru carbs) when starting from idle.  The engine is tight, compression and valve wise, and there are no vacuum leaks.  What do you think?

Question -
I have recently inheritied a whoa begotten 74 TR6 with a failed retard diaphragm (distributor) and have been unable to find a replacement.  I had heard from an old expert, over the counter at a parts store, that the dashpot is only for "show to affect emissions tests".  Since I don't live in an area that requires emmissions tests, I should just plug it (diaphragm) and set the timing to (can't remember) and RPMs at (didn't write it down).  Can someone tell me what those setting should be?  I have to have it running so I can get the body redone.

Answer -
bobby, you might find the part at one of the triumph specialty
places like Victoria British or Moss motors might still be around but it will be expensive. i plugged mine off and timed it "by ear" start the engine and let it idle, loosen the distributor bolt just untill you can just move the distributor by hand( but with a little force so it's not too loose ) clockwise advances it and counter clockwise retards it. if you turn it slowly counter until the engine stumbles then clockwise it will be smooth then stumble again when it is too far advanced. back it off to somewhere in between there.if you rev the engine up towards 4 to 5 thousand rpm and it stumbles then it needs a little more counter. you don't want any stumbling at all. the idle is 750 to 800 rpm.just be carful with it. if you have a timing light it times at 4 deg after tdc but yours will need alittle more advance and it might have a littless power. let me know what it does. Answer
without the advance retard system completely working you won't ever get the acceleration you are looking for bottom line.I've had porsche 911's that when you time them you rev them up to 6000 rpm then set it , that way you can run at 6000 and not take a chance of advancing further and doin damage.that is about the only you can do yours for max power with out screwing it up. basically if i were you i would advance it a little at a time until it gets better, numbers won't do you any good. the acceleration will improve to a point but as i said watch if you advance too far it will stumble probably at the 5000 rpm area. if you feel anything like that you must retard it until it stops doing it. good luck
