Triumph Repair: squeeking noise rear axle Spitfire1975, spitfire 1500, axle bearings

Question
Hello,
I have a spitfire 1500 from 1975. I have noticed recently a strange squeeking noise comming from the back left wheel. It seems that on each wheel revolution when accelarating a squeeking noise is heard. As soon I put press the clutch the noise stops. Do you have any ideas what the problem could be?
Many thanks,
Andrew

Answer
Andrew,

Is it a continous squeak or an intermittent sound?

It could be the universal joint on the axle is worn or seizing.  Another possibility is that the bearings themselves may finally be giving out, after all the car is 31 years old.

The most likely cause of noise at the rear axle is u-joints.  After that it's divided between differential noises (gear whine, bearing noise) or the rear axle bearings.

Cheers,

Jim
