Triumph Repair: 76 TR6 sputters from idle to 2000pm?, strombergs, diaphrams

Question
Jim,
i fixed the previous problem because it was running a little rich, however now it seems as my dashpots on the carbs are leaking, i will fill them up in the mornin and even sitting still there will be no oil in them by night..any help would be great, they are the standard ZS carbs for a 76 tr6

Answer
Ben,

I trust you used the proper Stromberg adjusting tool when you made your changes?

Unlike the SU carbs fitted to earlier Triumphs the Strombergs have a rubber diaphram that seals off the dashpot chamber.  The problem is that they seem to age quickly, and if you adjust the needle without the proper tool to keep the dashpot from rotating then the diaphram tears.  Or if it's old, it tears.  Or if it's raining, it tears.  Or if it's sunny... it tears.  You get the idea.

Any of the British parts suppliers can provide them and they are reasonably easy to replace as you only need to pull the dashpot assembly (4 screws each) and the retaining clip on the bottom of the dashpot (2 screws, as memory serves).

Just be very careful if you need to adjust the carbs again, or you be replacing the diaphrams yet again.

Cheers,

Jim
