Triumph Repair: Spitfire Transverse Leaf Spring Installation, leaf spring, spring replacement

Question
Jim,

My 80 Spit was leaning on the driver's side to an extreme. I figured the leaf spring was to blame, as I had discovered a 'spare' (a.k.a used) leaf spring in the trunk when I aquired the project.

I swapped the springs, but I'm having a bear of a time trying to re-install the bolt that runs through the spacer underneath the top group of leaves. I cleaned the spacer, put a little graphite grease on it, but I just can't get the bugger through.

Do I need to remove the leaf spring to install the bolt, or is there a trick or procedure to doing this?

Any and all advice is welcome, and many thanks for taking the initiative to provide you expertise to us all!

Best Regards,

Jon

Answer
Jon,

Typically the leaf spring replacement is done as a unit... ie... disconnect the leaf spring from the diff and the vertical links and pull the old spring out, then slide the "new" spring in.

I suspect you'd find it much easier to remove the spring completely rather than try to reassemble the spring in place.

Cheers,

Jim
