Triumph Repair: Steering wheel/column vibrations, rack bushings, suspension bushings

Question
!979 Spitfire w/overdrive.  At about 42 to 50 mph the steering wheel and column begin to vibrate quite a bit.  the front end of the car remains stable and tracks straight.  the hood does not shake at all, the tires are new and balanced. front brakes are new, rotors have just been turned, both front shocks are new. The vibration lessens a bit after 50 mph, but it does continue up to 65 mph.(that's as fast as I've gone)  Engine rpm does not seem to effect the vibration.

Answer
BC,

Vibration through the steering wheel is either something out of balance or something loose.

It it a "turning" motion on the steering wheel or is the whole column moving side to side (or up/down?)?

I'm guessing that you do not have wire wheels.  If you do, they're notoriously tough to balance properly as most tire shops have any clue these days on the proper jig required.  If you do have them, it's worth getting them rechecked.

I don't see any mention of checking/adjusting wheel bearings.  Another possibility is that either the rack bushings are starting to go or that the steering column bushings are worn.

What's the condition of the suspension bushings front and rear?  Trunion bushings?

If you can find a quiet multi lane road have a friend pace you in another car (or have the friend drive and you pace the Spitfire) and watch to see if you're seeing anything obvious in road wheel movement.

Sorry I can't give you a single definitive item to check out.

Cheers,

Jim
