Triumph Repair: Price, dog legs, alloy wheels

Question
Unfortunately - I do not have enough information to provide you at this time, I am looking at a 1973 Spitfire with 31K miles on it supposedly only 2 owners and in very good condition - it works - ballpark what is a good price.  Also when I go to look at it - what questions should I ask.  My husband is no help - he knows Corvettes....

Answer
R,

Since you don't mention where you (or the car) are located, I'll have to make some educated guesses.

A "complete running" Spitfire these days can be worth anywhere from $1 to $10,000.

How complete?  What shape is the body in?  Floor pan rust (normal)?  Accident damage (look inside the front edge fo the bonnet...er.. hood to you colonials).

How is the paint?  Seat vinyl?  Carpets?  Door panels?

When were the hydraulics last serviced?

Condition of the soft top?

Any options?  Hard top?  Overdrive?  Alloy wheels?

When was it last registered/inspected?

Parts car (there but rough) $1 to $500, depending upon condition and options

Driver (all there but needs cosmetics and minor repairs) $200 to $3500

Concours?  How much do you want to pay?

Spitfires tend to rust in the floor pan, rocker panels and dog legs, trunk floor, door bottoms, trunk lid back edge, battery box.  Those are the first places rust normally appears... if you see signs of rust in other areas (bonnet, door skins, etc) then check the "normal" areas for rust.

It's more what you see than what answers you get from the current owner.  Some honestly don't know, some are really trying to mislead.

If I knew where you were located I could even suggest a local Spitfire person to go look at the car with you.  That way you might get a better on the spot assessement.

Cheers,

Jim
