Triumph Repair: TR6 Transmission, shaft cover, emery cloth

Question
Understanding you've never comletely taken apart a transmission, I wonder if you could offer some advice as to the input shaft.  We were replacing the oil seal in the shaft cover when I noticed the shaft itself had some corrosion up near the casing.  About 1/8" of the shaft is clean, but there is some pitting beyond that that I cannot clean up with emery cloth.  So you think this will leak oil despite a new seal?  I have 2 transmssions, and the other has a good input shaft, but to take the shaft off one must crack the casings and drop the lower layshaft and replace the units .  There are reasons people are relunctant to get into the tranny.

So, what do you suggest?

Thanks so much

Answer
Joe,I have the Bently manual and it looks like the inputshaft can be removed from the front without too much trouble. it does mention a special tool.the bearing has 2 snap rings holding it then the tool looks like a slide hammer it clamps on behind the splines and you pull it off.at least that is what it looks like. OK now here is what i say I would polish it the best I could and put the new seal in and leave it.It's probably going to leak eventually. If you want try to remove the shaft don't replace it with the other one.I've worked in a machine shop for almost 10 years now (all though not automotive) but i know each assembly is a little different in measurments so you might run into problems. Now if you did get the shaft out there are places that can 'spray metal' onto the shaft and reclame the original dimensions! we have this done by a company in Englewood CO., EMPIRE METAL SPRAY I dont know if they would do a job like that but I'll find out if you think you want to doit that way. I hope this helps lit me know. DM
