Triumph Repair: Stromberg gas leak 1973 GT6, float bowl, brass button

Question
1973 GT6 MK3.   Gas is leaking from the bottom of the left hand carb.  I believe it is coming from the plastic plug with the brass button on the bottom of it.   I have new plug with fresh o-rings.  What do I need to do to get the old plug out and the new one in?

Answer
Jennifer,

If you look at the plug you can see that it's just a "push in" with plastic tangs that will hold it in place.

Sometimes you can take a pair of pliers and gently twist the old "plug" back and forth several times and it will come out.

If not, you can remove the float bowl, remembering that it will be full of gasoline so please take proper recautions!

The float bowl is held onto the carb by 5 or 6 screws (of different lengths... pay attention!!!) and can be removed carefully.  There is a gasket between the float bowl and the carb body that is prone to damage....  it's not a bad idea to have a spare ready.

Once the old plug is out use a shop rag to clean out any remaining bits of the old o-ring and/or "junk" from the gas.

To install the new plug simply fit the o-ring to the plug and gently push into place in the float bowl.  It will help to lubricate the new o-ring a bit, either with gasoline or just a touch of Armor All (or similar).

Cheers,

Jim
