Triumph Repair: Starter motor, starter motor, coil wire

How can I perform a manual check to determine if the starter motor is performing. 1972 Tr6

if it's off the car, use jumpper cables and a battery. ( - hooked to mounting area and + touch across terminals on seloniod of starter . the gear should jump hard foward and the starter motor should turn fast. on the car block wheel and be sure it's in neutral and the battery is good.. take a good sized screwdriver and try touch both terminals on the seloniod at the same time it will spark alot but do it quick just to find out the engine should turn over. before doing the test unplug the coil wire or the engine might start.
