UK Car Repair: rover 216si 1997, lambda sensor, mileage check

Question
QUESTION: when i start the car in the morning it idles ok and drives for ages and then occasionally the revs go high in the 4000 and then sometimes when driving it just stalls and i can start it again what could it be stopping me from making the car idle properly

ANSWER: From experience Revving around 4000 can be down to the oxygen/lambda sensor on the exhaust manifold -

Have the diagnostics scanned, it's the only way to reliably diagnose a fault like this: though you should check for leaks around the inlet manifold first, check all electrical connections under the bonnet too, clean all the engine breather hoses and inspect the throttle body, make sure it isn't sticking.

If there's nothing obviously wrong have the diagnostics scanned (some parts shops can do this for a very small fee, most garages can scan rover codes too)

-- Just a thought.. Maybe the headgasket is leaking. They tend to let go around 70-75,000 miles on these engines and foul the lambda sensor causing the over revving. If you're around that mileage check for oil in the water/water in the oil and do a compression test just to be sure.

Good luck.

QUESTION: i sorted the idling problem and i just noticed now theres oil in the water tank but it drives all day without overheating or loss of power could this be a headgasket or something else please let me know asap

Answer
need to know

1 - what was the cause of the idling problem?

2 - how much oil in the expansion tank?, just a sheen of oil or has the water turned to sludge?

3 - Are you losing water or oil at any appreciable rate?
