UK Car Repair: silver shadow start problems, starter relay, shadow 1

QUESTION: Hi,My Rolls Silver Shadow 1 (1977)clicks on ignition and will not turn over,the odd time maybe.The starter motor has just been replaced but the problem still exists.Once fitted the starter didn't engage,but then did and the starter over-ran.then when started again just ignition lights came on.Any ideas????

ANSWER: Starter relay.

You did properly test it, though maybe 50 operations?.


Check the engine earths.

Check the multifunction (ignition) switch.

Check and test all other relays - one gets its power from the other and so on, so about 2/3 relays make up the entire ignition circuit.


Check all fuseholders for corrosion, check all the relay terminals on the fusebox side for corrosion.

Turn on all accesories and wiggle the connectors and wires, something is loose or worn.



(44 years... time for a Re-wire really)
