UK Car Repair: stuck on 1000revs, ford fiesta zetec, odb ii

Question
I am driving a 2001 Ford Fiesta Zetec and this morning on my way to work, even when stationary the revs are stuck at 1000.  Any idea why this is and what I need to do about it?

Answer
1000RPM is just over the reccomended low-Idle speed which I think is 700-950RPM if memory serves me.

A lot of different things could bring about a slightly high idle - If you know a fair and honest mechanic have the throttle cable and "IDLE AIR SCREW" checked and adjusted if neccesary - that's where I think the problem lies, if the throttle cable and Idle Air Screw appear to be fine...
- it could be sticking at high idle, due to a bad temp sender (sensor)
I would take the car in for a diagnostic scan, (Phone a few parts shops and garages and ask for a diagnostic scan, don't pay over $30, £20, you may even get it done for free at some places - luckily your car has the ODB-II engine management system which is very common)  find out if it has given any error codes, and relay these codes back to me and I can find out where the fault lies - don't take the mechanics word for what the error code points to, I have fords workshop manual, I can diagnose properly with the error codes because of this manual.
