QUESTION: can you tell me the position of the number 1 piston on a 1999 fiat punto sx60

ANSWER: I don't know this car BUT,  No 1 is almost always at the front of the engine. On a transverse engine, that is the side where the radiator and belts are.  What was it you were going to check?

QUESTION: he tmming on the car was what we were checking

Answer
Then the best way is; remove the spark plugs, mark the distributor body below where the front plug wire goes then remove the the distributor cap. Using the timing mark on the flywheel, turn the engine over by hand until the flywheel mark aligns with the pointer on the front cover. the rotor arm should point to the segment above your mark if so, this is TDC No 1. If the rotor points in the opposite direction, you have to turn the engine one complete turn to get it on the compression stroke.
