UK Car Repair: 1991 VW transporter rear light, reverse light switch, replacement lamps

Question
Paul,

i have just bough a 1991 VW transporter that has been converted into a camper van.  Now this is cool and great but onoe small problem, the reversing lights don't work!!!  I have bought the replacement lamps but due to the conversion I can't seem to get into the rear light cluster from the back.  Is there any other way of getting into it or am I going to have to cut a hole in the side of the cupboard so I can get the lamps replaced?

Answer
Hi Mark, a little out of my depth here but I will give it a shot. Are there any screws on the lamp lens or on the side. there may be a clip on bezel which hides the screws? If both lights are out ten turn our attention to the reverse light switch (locate this on the gearbox and test for a live when in reverse). If all else fails you can obtain a clear lamp and attach it to your rear bumper and run a wire from the reverse light switch (it would not look great but would be street legal). Beyond this I cannot be of much help sorry- hope I have been of some use -Paul
