UK Car Repair: nissan sunny - dodgy electric windows, blower heater, window switches

Question
QUESTION: Hi. I have a 10 year old 3 door nissan sunny. The electric windows and sunroof do not work. Any help leading me in the right direction would be most appreciated!!! Thanks.

ANSWER: Hey Julieanne, have you checked the fuses relating to these? Or the relay which switches on with the ignition live (I do not have any information to hand right now so I cannot tell you which ones these are) pull each fuse out in turn and check it for continuity if you cannot tell by looking at the fuses whether or not they are blown you can use a MultiMeter or if you do not have one make a simple bulb circuit. The fact that neither the windows nor the sunroof will work makes me think that a fuse has blown. let me know - thanks Paul

QUESTION: Hi there
I checked the fuses and they are all fine. I am stumped now as to which switch will be for the windows/sunroof. Any guidance? I have the book but there are so many!! Thanks so much for your help!

Answer
Hi Julieanne, do you have ,or have access to a volt meter ? Check the power to the sunroof motor and track it back also check that there is a good ground (find a wire which you know to be live and attach the red probe of the meter to it and use the black probe to find a ground at the motor end. As to which switch is which (you mean relay?) When I have no info I use a process of elimination to locate a relay, start under the bonnet and ignore the ones you already know (fuel pump, ignition, cooling fan ,etc.) join a wire across from the 30 pin to the usually 87/86 pin with the ignition on and keep trying the sunroof/window switches, doing this on certain relays will cause the cooling fan to come on  or the wipers or the blower heater or other systems on the car to act, just means you are doing it right if this happens. this is how you eliminate each of the relay functions. If this sounds a little complicated to you then locate the part in your book where it mentions relays and you should be able to find it. If you cannot find it then find the most relevant page and scan/e-mail it to me and I will see if I can make any more sense of it for you. good luck and hope I can help in this somewhat limited capacity. - Paul
