UK Car Repair: 1994 xj6, negative battery cable, radiator tank

Question
QUESTION: 2 questions if i may:
1. my cooling fan will not turn off after turning my engine off. this runs my
battery down so i unplugged the negative battery cable....leading to my
second question
2. when i replugged my negative battery cable the alrm system goes off. i
tried the emergency disarming procedure poutlined in my manual to no avail.
My handset is broken.

ANSWER: The fan problem may be the switch in the left radiator tank.  There was though, a technical bulletin describing a corrosion problem in the fan harness behind the left indicator lamp in the front bumper.  The repair kit is JLM 12040.  As for the alarm, first turn on the ignition then turn off the security switch in the centre console, turn the ignition back on then operate the security switch until you hear a beep or, the headlamps flash. Now switch off the ignition, if to no avail, try it a few times using different sequences, if no luck you may have to purchase a remote.

QUESTION: thanks william.. i got into my car without much ado after you told me just what
to do.
3rd question. my brake lights weren't working so i replaced the bulbs (which are
also the turn signal bulbs) so now the turn signals work but the brake lights still
do not illuminate. I checked the fuse boxes (there are three) and looked for any
that referred to brake lights but no blown fuses.  HELP!!!!!

Answer
There is no fuse for the brake lights. The problem is most likely in the combined brake/cruise control switch mounted beside the brake pedal above the drivers knee panel. Before changing it, have it checked with a test light for a positive feed in -and, when pushed,- out.
