UK Car Repair: rover 216 auto 92 not starting when hot, rover 216, accelarator

Question
we have a rover 216 auto 92 it starts fine when cold but when hot the engine trys to turn over but then stalls the revs seem to die off,if you throttel it it stalls and the engine check light does not click off and 90% of time it happens after filling up with petrol after 5mins usally starts fine

Answer
First make sure the engine is not overheating, does the electric fan work?  Problems like this are usually associated with fuel vapourisation.  The fuel lines can get so hot that the fuel turns to vapour which cannot be "sucked" into the engine.  One way of overcoming it is to keep the accelarator fully open while starting, then release it once the engine is running!
