UK Car Repair: water hose is busted., jaguar xj6, special tools

Question
QUESTION: I want to replace the hose on my Jaguar xj6 1988. I took it to a mechanic and he said I must take it to the dealer due to the position of the hose meaning the manifold needs to come out. Is this true and if so why the dealer? is it due to special tools. Can i do it myself to save money.
ANSWER: This a difficult hose to replace but the manifold does not have to come off. You can do it yourself, get the other hoses which go into the thermostat housing to manifold as they have to come off anyway, I see no reason why you can't do it yourself and wonder why he would send you to a dealer.

QUESTION: Just to be clear, to replace ALL the hoses to the cooling system, I don't have to take parts off the engine to get to it? If so are there special tools I need?

Answer
Originally you spoke about 1 hose and I assumed it to be the complex hose from the radiator to the left side of the engine.  This hose goes along under the Inlet manifold and is very difficult to get to but I always manage to do it, that being said, it is appropriate to change all of them as they are likely to all be of the vintage. No special tools are req'd.
