UK Car Repair: Fiat Punto Servicing, fiat punto 55, service periods

Question
Can you tell me how often i should be servicing a Fiat Punto (55 UK Plate) that does around 10000 miles per year?

The service book indicates that you should get it done every 12000 miles unless you are a low mileage user of <6000 miles, where you should get it done every year.  However, the garage told me i should be getting it done annually.

I am confused by what the service book and the garages are telling me, can you help?

Answer
Yes, the whole "service" system is confusing.  In order to compete on an economic basis the manufacturers - in order to reduce the cost of maintenence- have extended the service periods.  The fact is, all cars should be given a visual check and have the oil changed much more frequently, I would suggest no longer that 6 months for any vehicle. This simple service should be; an oil change, a check for leaks, brake wear, belts, hoses, tyres and lights.
