UK Car Repair: Rover 216 gearbox problem, rover 216, gearbox

Question
My gears were working fine earlier today and as I started the car and tried to put it into reverse when parked in a car park the gear stick flopped right over to the bottom right and was very wobbly. I tried to put it in various gears but it wouldn't bite it just flopped all over the place, eventually I managed to get it to bite in reverse although still wobbly, and apart from it will only bite in 3rd and 4th gear, it is as if the whole thing has shifted or something. Is there anything I can try which doesn't involve dropping the whole gearbox as it is difficult to access so will be a big job and take a few days and I need the car as we live in the countryside.

Answer
Hello. it sounds as though the clip which holds the lever in position has come off or something is just very loose. There is most likely access through the top of the tunnel, if not it has to be done from underneath. You could try pushing down hard on the lever as you try to engage a gear it might make it easier.
