UK Car Repair: Rover 75 2.0L 2001 manual., crankshaft sensor, itsself

Question
The problem is intermittent starting, it began yesterday with no warning in the heavy rain we had, I stopped the car to take a phone call and it would not start again, I pushed it to a steep hill and tried to bump start-nothing, it turns over OK.
I called green flag and waited, tried again after about and hour and it started, got home (15 miles).
2 hours later it started, did a short journey stopped engine then started ok, went for petrol would not start, left for hour, went back started, came home would not start
Can you help?

Answer
Unfortunately your case is not unusual. When it doesn't start -with someones help- turn over the engine and short out a plug wire with a screwdriver to see if you have a spark. Normally it is an electronic ignition problem, either the module itsself or a crankshaft sensor.  It could be a fuel problem, very often a filter will block and cause the pump to overheat.
