Answer
The only thing I can think of is a lack of fuel.  The original symptoms were odd.  Usually a diesel engine starts easier when it has warmed up.  It could well be that when cold, the system provided a fuel enrichment which facilitated starting, once the engine was warm the enrichment would cease etc. You have to find someone who can check the fuel delivery system, unless you can do it yourself.  A basic check is to loosen slightly one of the fuel delivery lines at the injector while the engine is being turned over, shroud it with a rag so that the fuel doesn't spray everywhere. If working properly there should be a very high pressure stream.  Regards
