UK Car Repair: vectra gearbox leak, synthetic motor oil, car repair manual

Question
i have a number of leaks from my engine & when I took it to a garage he said he thought it may be leaking from the gearbox,so I bought some gearbox oil got my owners manual & it doesnt say where it goes? can you help,my car is a 1.8 vectra artic 2 on a 1998 plate.

Answer
An automatic will fill from the transmission dipstick hole.
A manual will be filled with motor oil from a service plug in the side of the case.
In any case a book for the car "repair manual" is in order to diagram the specific capacity and what viscosity or grade of oil to fill it with. Gear Lube is way too thick for a modern or even semi modern gear box. The book will also diagram the specific location of the fill and drain plugs. Normal viscosity to find in a transmission is 5W-30 synthetic motor oil but do not hold me to that in this case as I have not had to change the oil in a vectra gearbox yet. Some manual transmissions "Ford Mustangs for instance" use automatic transmission fluid instead of oil to enhance the operation of a normally tight and clunky gearbox.
