UK Car Repair: noisey tappets vectra 98 sri140, pushrod engines, cam followers

Question
hi there could you please tell me how easy/hard it is to solve this problem .Is there a anybody who shows examples online? thanks very much

Answer
No, you will need to do one of two things.

You can take it to a shop and have it fixed as I would imagine that you do not want to tear apart your engine yourself and invest in the tools to replace them which are specialized due to the fact that the tappets are really known a "cam followers" in this instance as I believe you have an over head cam engine in your vectra. Tappets aka lifters are more noted for older pushrod engines. Cam followers go directly on top of the valve and are acted upon directly or indirectly by the camshaft in the cylinder head. Not a fun activity on a Sunday, or any day for that matter.

You can also get an oil change and ask them to put in an oil additive to loosen sticking "lifters". That may quiet them down.

If you are really itching to tear this car apart and fix it a book would be in order and a cheap way to decide on which course of action you would most like to take before you are armpit deep in an engine.

If you wish to know more about a lifter and how it works you can send me a private message through AllExperts and I will send you pictures of one and how it works.

Regards,

John
