UK Car Repair: Car cut out and now wont start, renault clio 1, dead fuel

Question
Hi, I own a Renault Clio 1.2 (1995).

The other day i was driving downhill on a Single carriageway at 60mph. When i broke for the roundabout and then returned my foot to the accelerator the engine had already cut out. As i was    coasting along i tried to bump start it while it was still moving but nothing. I pulled over and tried several times to start it but it only turns over.
There was fuel in the car at the time but i put some more in just incase and still nothing. A friend of mine then took the air intake off and sprayed some "easystart" down the intake saying that it might get it going, but it didnt.

I'm lost and so is my dad who knows a bit about cars. Its got a dodgy starter motor on it which i occasionally need to tap with a stick to get it goin but i cant see this interfeering.

Any Idea what might be causing this and how to fix it?

Thankyou

Answer
Sounds like a broken timing belt or dead fuel pump.
Take the valve cover off and turn it over to see if the cams are turning. If that all seems ok, check to see if it has a working pump by listening to the gas tank while someone turns the key on and off. Try that and get back to me.

John
