UK Car Repair: Renault 19 feul pump, fuel pump relay, petrol tank

Question
My 1995 renault won't start. If I pour fuel in the carburator it will run momentarily then quite again. I suspect the fuel pump. But I can't find the darn thing.
Do you agree with my summation and can you tell me where the heck the feul pump is.

Answer
It's in the petrol tank. Your car is fuel injected. The part you have been pouring fuel in is the throttle body. It only regulates air flow, the fuel injectors that are mounted in the intake manifold take care of the fuel. They are supplied by an in tank high pressure pump. If you run the car low on petrol a lot and or run it out of fuel on occasion the fuel pump could have suffered from it. But, it could be a badly plugged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump relay. To verify the pump is the culprit, have a friend turn the car from the full off position to the on position without turning the engine over. Kneel down and listen to the fuel tank. Put your hand on it too. Can you hear or feel a whirr? If yes, the problem is further up the system. If not... I guess you will need to check the relay and exhume the fuel tank. Provided it is not accessible from the passengers' compartment or the boot. Get a service manual for it and look into the section for fuel pump replacement.

Do that and get back to me and we'll take it from there.
Do not take any action until you get back to me.
