UK Car Repair: rack and pinion steering, tierods, tierod

Question
I have a 77 mgb. is there any way to tighten steering, to take out any play?

Answer
Yes charles, but first you need to look to see where the free play is. The 77 "B" has a telescoping column, one "U" joint and tierods that have a ball socket on the inner and a standard tierod on the outters. You must have someone work the free play in the steering while you look carefully at each of these.

If it is inside the rack, it can be adjusted by removing shims from the two bolted plate just over the pinion where it intersects the rack itself. Inside you will find a spring and a plunger that press the rack down onto the pinion. Check the rack for binding at full right and full left if you remove shims. The rack should be lubed with 90 weight gear oil. If you have any trouble e-mail me at
