UK Car Repair: trans, larry weaver, automatic transmissions

Question
Hello. I have 3 short questions about AUtomatic transmissions. (1). Can a transmission flush harm a transmission? (2). Why do no automatic transmissions have a drain plug like an engine? Only by changing the filter can a portion of the fluid be changed? (3). My car does not go into gear on cold mornings, why not? Thanks. Larry Weaver

Answer
Hi Larry,
As I state in my profile, I do not answer questions on automatic transmissions. However, I know the answer to the first two.

1. If you use the correct flush for the trans. it should not hurt it as long as you change the fluid and filter afterward. Torque converter too if it has a drain plug. Seen it used often but never seen it correct any problem.

2. So you will change the filter/screen when you change oil.

3. If the fluid level is correct and the fluid is colored correct and don't smell burnt I would seek out a known good transmission shop to pressure test/ stall test etc.

Sorry, that is the best I can tell you. I have been trained on auomatic transmissions but never worked on them. It is a profession in itself.
