UK Car Repair: Overdrive fault, electric solenoid, amp meter

Question
The OD on mt GT6 seems to be sticking on.  I can drive for 15 miles with no problems and then it seems to come on, of its own accord, in all gears.  Flicking the switch makes no differance.  If i then leave the car to cool down it is fine after 30 mins or so ( it disengages itself ). I have drained the gearbox twice.  I tried to get the internal filter out but dont have the correct tool - using a centre punch wouldnt shift it.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers

Answer
Hi Kevin,
The OD is a 2 spd auto trans. Direct & OD. A plunger type oil pump (powered by a cam on the output shaft)engages the OD. The electric solenoid on the lower side of the OD is what turns the OD on/off by operating a ball valve.

There is a fine adjustment on the operationg rod for that solenoid that can give you the symptom you have. On the side of the OD where the solenoid attaches there is a rectangle plate with 3 screws. Remove that plate and get a short piece of 3/16 rod. (the back end of a 3/16 drill bit works OK)
Gearbox in high gear, Ign. on, OD sw. on, You should be able to place the 3/16 rod through the 3/16 hole in the operating arm and into a 3/16 hole in the case with ease.
If not, adjust the lock nuted solenoid plunger so that when the OD solenoid is activeated you can slide the 3/16 rod in freely. Note if the arm relaxes when the OD sw is turned off. When you finish, put an amp meter in series with either one of the solenoid wires and operate it. The amp meter should jump high when you first turn the OD on then it should drop back to about 2 amps. It should take about 17 amp to activeate the sol. and about 2 amp to hold it. If it remains high, remove the sol. and check the plunger for free movement. It could be sticking which can cause your problem also. If all of this is correct check the ball valve in the top of the OD directly over the sol./lever area.
I hope this helps.
